SSA Membership
Become a Member!
Members of the SSA and its Chapters are the
lifeblood of the organization as a whole. We rely on our members to
become involved! Nothing speaks with greater impact than when an
organization speaks on behalf of a large number of constituents.
Working together, we will all reap the benefits of a united and stronger
organization that can better address the needs of those with a severe and
persistent mental illness and provide support to their families.
Current accepted statistics indicate that 1 in 100 persons
will develop schizophrenia in their lifetime. In Alberta, with a
population of 3 million, that means approximately 30,000 individuals and
their families will be impacted by schizophrenia.
Currently, the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta has over
586 members across the province. Early documentation showing the
breakdown of membership in the society generally breaks out in the
following manner: presently about 65% of the SSA members are family
members, 25% are consumers (i.e. people with the illness) and 10% are
professionals whose focus is mental illness.
